Removal Procedure
At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure.Steam can cause personal injury.Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.Remove the fill cap slowly to relieve pressure.Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with the skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.
Hot engine components can cause injury from burns. Before performing maintenance on the engine, allow the engine and the components to cool.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: Put identification marks on all hoses, on all hose assemblies on all wires, and on all tube assemblies for installation purposes. Plug all hose assemblies and plug all tube assemblies. This helps prevent fluid loss, and this helps keep contaminants from entering the system.
Drain the coolant from the cooling system. The capacity of the cooling system is 62 L (16 US gal).
Drain the oil from the engine. The capacity of the engine crankcase is 27 L (7 US gal).

Remove tube assembly (2). Remove the gasket from the turbocharger.
Loosen two hose clamps (3) and slide the hose toward oil cooler (1) .

Remove bracket (6). Remove pipe (4) and remove gasket (5) .

Disconnect engine oil cooler (1) from the bonnet for the transmission oil cooler.
Remove four bolts (8) that hold engine oil cooler (1) to the filter base. Remove engine oil cooler (1) and remove gasket (7) .

Remove O-ring seals (9) from the oil filter base.

Remove elbows (11) and O-ring seals (10) .
