start by: a) remove oil pumpb) remove oil pan plate 1. Remove No. 2 and No. 6 main bearing caps.2. Use tool (A) to remove upper halves of main bearings by turning crankshaft and pushing the bearing out of cylinder block. Remove lower halves of bearings from the caps.3. Put clean engine oil on bearing surfaces of upper halves of bearings. Use tool (A) to put upper halves of bearings into position.4. Clean the main bearing caps. Install the lower halves of bearings in the caps.5. Use wire (B) to check bearing clearance. Install caps and tighten both bolts to 30 3 lb.ft. (4,1 0,4 mkg). Put a mark on head of bolts and on bearing caps. Turn each bolt an additional 90° from mark. Remove bearing caps and check thickness of wire. Main bearing clearance should be .0030 to .0059 in. (0,076 to 0,150 mm).6. Put oil on threads of cap bolts, face of washers, and on lower halves of bearings. Put caps in position on cylinder block with number of cap toward the same number marked on left side of block. Install bolts and washers. Tighten both bolts to 30 3 lb.ft. (4,1 0,4 mkg). Put mark on head of bolts and on caps. Turn each bolt an additional 90° from mark. 7. Remove No. 1, 3, 4, 5, and 7 bearing caps. Remove crankshaft thrust bearings (1). Put clean oil on thrust bearings, and install them in block with groove in bearing toward crankshaft.
TYPICAL EXAMPLE8. Do Steps 2 through 6 for remainder of bearings. Check crankshaft end play using indicator group (C). End play with new parts will be .0025 to .0145 in. (0,064 to 0,368 mm).
