Filtering and Reusing Cat ELC
Note: Coolant that has been drained and filtered must be returned to the same engine.Note: This is not a recommended practice for Caterpillar machines and engines. However special circumstances may warrant this practice. Examples of special circumstances
Early hour failure
Service intervals which include draining of the coolant Cat ELC can be filtered and reused. Refer to "Procedure for Draining the Coolant and Reusing the Coolant" for more detailed instructions. The coolant must have the glycol level and the nitrite level tested. Also, a S O S coolant analysis (Level 2) must be performed.Note: If Cat ELC is not used, follow the maintenance guide for the coolant that is provided by the supplier of the commercial coolant.
Use only Caterpillar products or commercial products that have passed Caterpillar's EC-1 specification for pre-mixed or concentrated coolants. Use only Caterpillar Extender with Extended Life Coolant. Mixing Extended Life Coolant with other products reduces the Extended Life Coolant service life. Failure to follow the recommendations can reduce cooling system components life unless appropriate corrective action is performed.
When using Cat ELC, do not use standard SCA's or SCA filters. To avoid SCA contamination of an ELC system, remove the SCA filter base and plug off or by-pass the coolant lines.
Procedure for Draining the Coolant and Reusing the Coolant
Note: The following procedure is for engines and/or cooling systems with Cat ELC. The coolant must have less than 8,000 service hours or 4 years of service life. Coolant that has been drained and filtered must be returned to the same engine.
This procedure should be performed in an enclosed, controlled environment in order to minimize contamination of the coolant that might occur in the field.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Drain the ELC from the coolant system into a suitable container. Use 222-6714 Fuel Filter Gp to filter the coolant as the coolant flows into the container.
Make any necessary repairs to the cooling system.
Flush the system with clean water in order to remove any debris. Refer to, SEBU6250, "Caterpillar Machine Fluids Recommendations". Allow the system to drain, and then reseal the system.
Check the glycol level of the coolant/antifreeze. Use 1U-7298 Coolant/Battery Tester or 1U-7297 Coolant/Battery Tester .
Check the nitrite level of the cooling system. Use 4C-9301 Coolant Conditioner Test Kit and follow the recommendations.
Submit a coolant sample for S O S Coolant Analysis (Level 2). Contact your Caterpillar Dealer for more information.Special Tools
If the glycol levels and nitrate levels and the Level 2 Coolant Analysis are acceptable, return the ELC to the cooling system. Use the following Caterpillar tools in order to prevent debris from entering the cooling
