PRODUCT SUPPORT PROGRAM FOR FINAL DRIVE FAILURES, 992C (42X and 49Z) Loaders, 4050, 4055, PS0218 U-55 A-35.1 AU-46 C-50 E-33.1 O-41 SEE FEBRUARY 15, 1985 The October 8, 1982 Service Letter on final drive failures, PS0130, is canceled and replaced by this Service Letter. Cross out your copy of that Service Letter and refer to this new Service Letter. Problem The final drives on some 992C Loaders may not give satisfactory life due to a failure of the planet gears, shafts, thrust washers, and/or planet gear bearings. Extensive damage and unscheduled downtime can result. Better steel is used in the planet and sun gears, and larger planet bearings with X-bar cages and inner races are used. The new parts eliminate the need for thrust washers. New parts with these same features are available for parts service. Affected 992C Loaders And Parts 42X614-up 49Z1-49Z475, 477-480 New parts for one final drive are: 1 - 9V3582 Sun Gear 3 - 6W297 Spacer 3 - 9V8905 Shaft 6 - 1V6658 Washer-Bearing 3 - 6W299 Gear-Planet 1 - 4D449 Seal 6 - 6V9038 Bearing 1 - 5P4057 Seal Action Requested No action is requested unless an actual failure occurs in the final drive, and this is the primary cause of failure. Failures originating in the brake, wheel bearings, axle shaft, etc., are not included. If a final drive failure occurs, be sure to inspect the final drive on the opposite side for signs of any damage or excess wear. If there are any indications of problems in the opposite final drive, further inspection and disassembly may be required and is at the discretion of and responsibility of the dealer. The new parts are direct replacements and should all be used together. See Illustration for the assembly of the parts. A press fit of 36-54 kN (4-7 tons) is required to force the new shafts through the new bearings. Note that the former 1V6657 Washers at the bearings are no longer used. The new 1V6658 Washer serves as a spacer on the outer side of each new bearing. Use the improved adjustment procedure for the wheel bearings. See June 25, 1984 Service Magazine.
