MG507, MG507A Marine Gears On 3208 Engines ( 1Z)It is not necessary to use a special SKF hydraulic press to remove the drive spider (hub) from the input shaft on MG507 or MG507A Marine Gears. The following alternate method requires no special tools and is simpler.
Obtain a 3/8"-16 bolt with about 1.25" of thread length. Wrap the threads with teflon tape to seal the threads and prevent oil from leaking around the threads. Do the following: 1. Remove the front locknut and the sheet metal lock.
Location of oil hole used to assist in removing the drive spider.2. Loosen the rear locknut until there is about 6 mm (.25") clearance between this nut and the face of the spider.
The rear locknut must remain on the shaft to keep the spider from coming off when it is released from the taper on the input shaft.
3. Position the parts so the input shaft is pointing up as shown.4. Fill the tapped hole in the end of the shaft with SAE 30 oil. Make sure all the air is out of the hole.5. Thread the bolt with the teflon tape into the hole and tighten it with a 1/2" drive socket and breaker bar. Tighten the bolt until the spider breaks loose from its shaft. It will break loose with considerable force. Tightening the bolt creates a hydraulic pressure which slightly expands the inside of the spider causing it to slide off the tapered shaft.
