Typical Example1. Using a pry bar, move front idler (1) partially out of the undercarriage frame assembly as shown.2. Fasten a hoist to idler (1) and remove. The weight of the idler is approximately 1363 kg (3000 lb). The following steps are for the installation of the front idler.3. Fluid Spillage ContainmentCare must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "TOOLS AND SHOP PRODUCT GUIDE, NENG2500", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates.Start By:a. remove front idlers1. Thoroughly clean the outside of the front idler prior to disassembly.2. Remove the fill/drain plug from the front idler. Drain the oil from the idler in a suitable container. The capacity of the idler is approximately 3500 ml (8.2 pt). 3. Position the front idler as shown. The weight of the front idler is approximately 1465 kg (3230 lb).4. Remove four bolts (1) and bracket tie (2). 5. Fasten a hoist to bearing sleeve (4) as shown. Remove two pins (3) from bearing sleeve (4). Remove bearing (4) from the shaft of the front idler. The weight of the bearing sleeve is approximately 82 kg (180 lb).6. Repeat step 5 for the other bearing sleeve. 7. Remove Duo-Cone seals (5) from bearing sleeve (4). 8. Remove shaft (6) from the front idler.9. Remove two O-ring seals from shaft (6).10. Remove Duo-Cone seal (7) from each side of the front idler.11. Remove bushings located behind the Duo-Cone seals (7) from each side of the idler. The following steps are for the assembly of the front idler.12. Thoroughly clean all parts of the front idler prior to assembly.13. Check the condition of bushings. If the bushings are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.14. Lower the temperature of bushings and install one in each side of the front idler with a press.

The rubber seals and all surfaces that make contact with the seals must be clean and dry. After installation of the seals, put SAE 30W oil on the contact surfaces of the Duo-Cone seals.15. Install a Duo-Cone seal (7) in each side of the idler with Tool (A).16. Install a Duo-Cone seal (5) in each bearing sleeve (4) with Tool (A).17. Check the condition of O-ring seals used on shaft (6). If the seals are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement. Install two O-ring seals on shaft (6). Put clean SAE 30W oil on the seals.18. Check the
