2. Remove the crankshaft main bearing cap retaining nuts (1). Remove the crankshaft main bearing caps (2). 3. Install rubber hoses over each of the four end studs to protect crankshaft during removal and installation.4. Fasten hoist and remove the crankshaft. Weight is 300 lbs. (136 kg).5. Remove the crankshaft main bearings from the cylinder block and main bearing caps.Install Crankshaft
1. Put all timing marks on timing gears in alignment.2. Install and put lubricant on the upper halves of crankshaft main bearings.3. Install rubber hoses over the four end studs. Fasten a hoist and install crankshaft with the "V" mark on crankshaft gear in alignment with "V" mark on idler gear.4. Main bearings caps must be clean. Install lower halves of bearings in caps.5. Using wire (B), check the bearing clearance. Install caps and tighten both retaining nuts to 75 5 lb.ft. (10,4 0,7 mkg), mark both nuts and bearing caps, then tighten each nut an additional 120° from mark. Remove the bearing caps, and measure thickness of wire. Main bearing clearance should be .0035 .0066 in. (0,088 0,167 mm). Maximum permissible clearance is .010 in. (0,25 mm).6. Put SAE 30 engine oil on threads of cap retaining studs, face of washers, and lower halves of main bearings. Put caps on engine with number stamped on cap facing, the like number stamped on oil pan rail on the left side of cylinder block. Install retaining nuts and washers. Tighten both nuts to 75 5 lb.ft. (10,4 0,7 mkg), mark both nuts and bearing caps, then tighten both nuts an additional 120° from mark. 7. Using indicator group (A), check the crankshaft end play. End clearance should be .006-.018 in. (0,152-0,475 mm). Maximum permissible end play is 0.35 in. (0,88 mm).8.
