(2) Front slack adjuster Rear slack adjuster (1) is located above the rear axle housing.Front slack adjuster (2) is located below the truck body above the center tube.Operation of the slack adjusters keeps the timing constant between the brake application and the stopping of the machine. Because of the slack adjuster, the same brake application will work with new brakes or with worn brakes. A slack adjuster is in the oil systems for the front brakes and for the rear brakes. The slack adjuster is full of oil.

(15) Passage for makeup oil When the service brakes are used or when the retarder is used, the control valve (brake) sends oil through inlet (5) of the slack adjuster. The oil pressure in the slack adjuster pushes pistons (4) and (6) away from the center of the slack adjuster. Pistons (4) and (6) push the oil in oil chambers (8) and (13) through outlets (3) and (7) to the brakes in each wheel. This oil initiates the brake application.If the brakes have worn, the oil from chambers (8) and (13) may not complete the brake application. When pistons (4) and (6) are against the ends of the slack adjuster, the oil from the control valve (brake) will fill oil passages (9) and (12). If the pressure in passages (9) and (12) is higher than the pressure in outlets (3) and (7), small pistons (10) and (11) move away from the piston seats. Additional oil from the control valve (brake) can flow through the open piston seats to passages (14) and (15). This oil flows through outlets (3) and (7) in order to complete the brake application. When the operator stops applying pressure to the brakes, the control valve (brake) will drain the oil from the slack adjuster.
