Introduction
The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.Problem
There have been instances of issues with the Clean Emissions Module (CEM) being replaced. The reasons for the replacements have been quoted as siloxanes as a root cause.Continued silicon deposition and/or plugging will eventually result in high aftertreatment back pressure and either stall the engine or cause movement of the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). This condition will require CEM replacement.Siloxane poisoning is a phenomenon resultant of the bi-product gases generated from the plastic and pharmaceutical products waste handling, where through combustion process of the air the gas is transformed into sand/glass particles (Silicon) that attach to the DOC and DPF.The following event codes are common when siloxane poisoning occurs:
E1309 Low Aftertreatment #1 SCR Catalyst Conversion Efficiency
E1389 Aftertreatment #1 SCR Operator Inducement
E2180 Low Aftertreatment #1 Diesel Oxidation Catalyst #1 Conversion EfficiencyThese event codes can also indicate the use of high sulphur fuel. The CEM can be fully recovered if high sulphur fuel is the root cause. Follow the applicable troubleshooting procedures to ensure that the correct root cause is identified.Solution
Do not operate or work on this product unless you have read and understood the instruction and warnings in the relevant Operation and Maintenance Manuals and relevant service literature. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the warnings could result in injury or death. Proper care is your responsibility.
Follow the appropriate troubleshooting procedure if one or more of the following event codes are active.
E1309 Low Aftertreatment #1 SCR Catalyst Conversion Efficiency
E1389 Aftertreatment #1 SCR Operator Inducement
E2180 Low Aftertreatment #1 Diesel Oxidation Catalyst #1 Conversion EfficiencyIf the fuel being used is not the correct specification, replace the fuel with the correct specification. Refer to Special Publication, SEBU6251, "Caterpillar Commercial Diesel Engine Fluids Recommendations" for the correct specification of fuel.If the root cause of the event codes is identified as high sulphur fuel, use the "Aftertreatment Sulfation Recovery" procedure in the electronic service tool to recover the CEM. Refer to Troubleshooting, Service Tool Features - Aftertreatment Sulfation Recovery for the correct procedure.Note: If the DOC or DPF substrates have moved due to excessive back-pressure, the CEM cannot be recovered. Refer to Special Instruction, M0077352, "Soot Antennae Check for C7.1 Engines" for additional information. If the root cause is identified as siloxane poisoning, submit the following information through the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN) and "CPI Feedback" within the Service Information Management System (SIMSi):
Machine operating environment
Maintenance service interval history
Event code history
Product Status Report (PSR)
