1. Loosen clamp (1) and hose clamp (2). Remove precleaner (3) from air cleaner assembly.
Typical Example2. Loosen hose clamps (4) at the air cleaner and at the turbocharger. Remove hose assembly (5). 3. Disconnect electrical connection (8) and line (7) from the starting aid assembly. Remove bolt (6) and the washer that secure the transmission 0il fill pipe to the air cleaner assembly. 4. Disconnect air conditioning dryer (9) at each end. The dryer is located between the rear of the cab and the air cleaner assembly. The fittings on each side of the dryer should be quick disconnect fittings. If the fittings at the dryer are not quick disconnect fittings, refer to the warnings below prior to disconnecting of any lines.
Effective July 1, 1992 regulations prohibit the venting of any refrigerant into the atmosphere. Refer to Caterpillar publication SENR3334-01, SENR5664 and NEDG5065-01 for the proper procedure, equipment and tools to reclaim refrigerant from any Caterpillar machine.
Always wear goggles when working on air conditioning systems. The system is under pressure at all times, engine running or not. Escaping refrigerant R-12 (C C12F2Dichloro Difluoro Methane) and refrigerant R-134A can cause freezing of human flesh.Do not smoke while working on air conditioning. Inhaling Refrigerant R-12 or R-134A through any smoking material, although not toxic or flammable, can cause violent illness. Also heat must never be applied to a charged system. See Air Conditioning And Heating Service Manual Form No. SENR3334-01 and SENR5664, for more information on removal and installation of lines and refrigerant from the system.
5. Remove bolt, washer, and strap (11) fastening heater hoses to air cleaner assembly and bolt, washer and strap (12) holding harness. 6. Loosen hose clamp (13) and separate dust ejector tube (14) by sliding hose toward muffler end.
Typical Example 7. Support air cleaner assembly with a hoist and strap. Remove three bolts and washers (15) from each side. These bolts are located between the cab and the air cleaner assembly.8. Remove bolt and washer (16).9. Remove air cleaner assembly. The weight of the air cleaner assembly is 93 kg (125 lb). The following steps are necessary for the removal of the air cleaner canister.

Typical Example12. Remove four bolts and washers (20). Remove air cleaner canister from frame. Install in reverse order.Remove & Install Air Cleaner Element
1. Remove cover (1) from air cleaner assembly by releasing clamps (2). 2. Remove primary air filter element (3) and secondary air filter element (4). The following steps are necessary to install the air filter element. 3. Check the condition of the elements and replace as needed. 4. Install secondary element (4) first, making sure that it is seated properly in the bore of the air filter housing. 5. Install primary element (3) and cover (1).
