Choosing a Site
See Application & Installation Guide, LEKX5361-01 for detailed site planning considerations. The power module must be parked on a flat surface. A power module can be parked on a concrete pad or a level natural surface. The foundation must be prepared for the operation of the power module. The foundation must be able to bear the weight of the power module and any forces from engine operation.Place railroad ties or place wood beams beneath the power module. The wood beams will prevent the power module from settling in the soft surface due to the weight of the power module. Using wood beams to support the power module should be considered for the following conditions: loose soil, loose gravel, loose sand and wet conditions.A concrete pad should be considered if the power module will be operated at a site for a long time. A concrete pad should also be considered if the site is used frequently.Exhaust Discharge
Heat from the engine must be removed from the power module during the operation of the power module. Some of this heat will exit with the engine exhaust. Other heat is removed from the cooling system as a cooling fan forces air through a radiator core. Both of these exhaust streams will leave the power module and enter the surrounding area. When choosing a site, be sure to consider the hot exhaust that exits the power module. The exhaust stack is comprised of an inner and outer stack. The stack configuration creates a venturi which is critical to crankcase ventilation, and prevents rain water from entering the fumes disposal system. Ensure that both stacks are fitted. Caterpillar recommends the use of an anti-seize compound on the bolts that secure the stacks.Park the power module so there are not any trees and plants in the path of the hot exhaust. The excessive heat may destroy trees and plants. Do not park the power module in the surrounding area of dry vegetation. Do not place the air inlet of a power module in the location of the exhaust stream from another power module.Be aware of overhead power lines. A 50 feet minimum height is need if the power module is parked and power lines are present. Make sure that any power lines are not exposed to hot exhaust. Overhead power lines may also become coated with soot. An electric arc may develop between the exhaust soot and the ground if exhaust soot is allowed to build up on power lines.
