Information:
Use this procedure to solve communication problems between the Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) and the applicable Electronic Control Module (ECM). Cat ET must communicate with the ECM on the J1939 data link to service the engine.Indicators on the communication adapter indicate that communication is occurring on a particular data link. The "J1939 / DeviceNet" indicator indicates that the communication adapter is communicating on the J1939 data link. The following conditions can cause a communication problem:
Incorrect communication adapter
Incorrect version of Cat ET
Incorrect firmware in the communication adapter
Incorrect configuration of Cat ET
A problem with electrical power to the communication adapter
A problem with electrical power to the ECM
A problem with the wiring for a data link
A problem with the electrical cables between the PC and the service tool connector
Table 1
Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Attempt to Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET)
Communication Problem
Result: No Electronic Control Modules (ECMs) are detected.
Repair: There may be an issue with the service port, or with the global CAN network.
Refer to the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) troubleshooting material to determine if there is an issue with the global CAN network.
Result: Some ECM(s) are detected.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Verify that the Correct CAN Network is Connected to Pump Electronic Monitoring System (PEMS)
A. Verify that the Correct CAN Network is Connected to PEMS.
B. Verify the wiring for CAN going into the 6-pin connector on the ECM mounting bracket is connected to the global CAN network.
Global CAN
Result: Global CAN is wired into the 6-pin connector on the ECM mounting bracket.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: Global CAN is not wired into the 6-pin connector on the ECM mounting bracket.
Repair: Connect the global CAN network to the 6-pin connector on the ECM mounting bracket.
Return to service.
3. Check for Power and Ground at the 6-pin Connector
A. Turn the power to the piece of equipment ON.
B. Disconnect the 6-pin wiring harness from the ECM bracket.
C. Check the voltage between pin 1 and pin 2 on the 6-pin wiring harness connector.
D. Check the voltage between pin 2 and pin 3 on the 6-pin wiring harness connector.
Battery Voltage
Result: Battery voltage was present at both pins.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: Battery voltage was not present at both pins.
