start by:a) remove drive axlesb) remove rear axle housing (oscillating)c) remove front supportd) remove rear slack adjuster **See VEHICLE SYSTEMS DISASSEMBLY AND ASSEMBLY Section.1. Drain the oil from the rear axle housing. 2. Remove two bolts (2), then remove cover (1) and the shims behind it. 3. Install a 3/8"-16 NC forged eyebolt (4) in pin (3). Remove the pin and O-ring seal on it. 4. Remove two nuts (5), then remove brake line cover (6). 5. Remove nut (7) and clip (9), then remove brake line (8). Do Steps 2 through 5 for opposite side of axle housing. 6. Remove thirty-four bolts (10) from the differential housing. 7. Install two 7/8"-9 NC x 5 in. long guide pins (12) in the differential housing. Install three 7/8"-9 NC forcing screws (11) in the differential housing. 8. Make a separation between the differential housing and axle housing approximately 1 in. (25.4 mm). 9. Fasten tooling (B) to the differential housing (13). Remove the three forcing screws. Remove the differential and bevel gear from the axle housing. Weight of the unit is 1750 lb. (793 kg). Remove O-ring seal from the differential housing.Install Rear Differential And Bevel Gear
1. Install a new O-ring seal on the differential housing. Fasten tooling (A) to the differential and bevel gear. Install two 7/8"-9 NC x 5 in. long guide pins (1) in the axle housing. 2. Put differential and bevel gear (2) in position on the guide pins (1) approximately 1 in. (25.4 mm) from the axle housing. Remove tooling (A) from the differential and bevel gear. Push differential and bevel gear on to axle housing and install the bolts that hold it. Tighten these bolts to a torque of 300 30 lb.ft. (221 22 N m) plus an additional 120 degrees 10 degrees. 3. Put brake line (4) in position on the axle housing. Install clip (3) and nut (5). 4. Install brake line cover (6) and the nuts (7) that hold it. 5. Install a new O-ring seal (9) on pin (8). Install pin (8) in the axle housing. Install cover (12) without shims. Install two bolts (10). Tighten bolts enough to remove any clearance between pin (8) and cover (12). 6. Use a feeler gauge (11) and measure the distance between the faces of the cover and the axle housing. Install an amount of shims necessary to get the correct clearance between the cover and axle housing, the same thickness as the distance plus .002 .001 in.
