Remove Idler Gears
1. Remove cover plate (1) and the gasket from the compartment of the idler gears.2. Remove the bolts that hold bearing cage (2) to the case and install two forcing screws of the correct size. Remove the cage and the shims with the forcing screws. Keep the shims with the cage for use during installation. Remove the O-ring seal from the cage. 3. Remove spiral retaining ring (3) that holds the idler gear to the gear assembly. 4. Pull gear assembly (4) part of the way out of the idler gear and fasten it to a hoist. Use one hand to keep idler gear in balance until pinion gear is out of the way, then let idler gear roll slowly to one side against the case. Remove the gear assembly from the case. Weight of the gear assembly is 66 lb. (30 kg) on the 58 and 59 Winches and 38 lb. (17 kg) on the 57 Winch.5. Fasten a hoist to the idler gear and remove it from the case. Weight is 62 lb. (28 kg) on the 58 and 59 Winches and 40 lb. (18 kg) on the 57 Winch. Inspect the bearing cones and cups. If bearings need replacement, follow procedure in Steps 6 through 15 for removal. 6. Remove bearing cones (5) and (6) with tooling (A). 7. Remove the bearing cup from the bearing cage with tooling (B). 8. Remove the drum shaft spanner nut with tooling (C) on the 58 and 59 Winches. Remove the drum shaft nut on the 57 Winch.9. Remove the washer and the O-ring seal from the shaft.10. Remove bolts (7) from the flange that is a support for the drum shaft. Install three forcing screws of the correct size and tighten evenly.11. Remove the flange and the shims. Keep the shims with the flange for use during installation. Remove the O-ring seal from the flange. 12. Put a wood block between the drum drive gear and the case to prevent the drive gear from turning. Remove the bolts and bearing retaining ring (8). 13. Install two 3 in. (76.2 mm) long guide pins (9) of the correct size through the drum drive gear and into the drum support flange. Install two forcing screws (10) of the correct size and tighten them evenly. Move drum drive gear (12) off the drum support spline on to the guide pins to make clearance for bearing cup removal.14. Remove bearing (11) from the drum shaft to prevent possible damage. 15. Remove bearing cup (13) with tooling (D).Install Idler Gears
If bearings were removed, follow the procedure in Steps 1 through 10 for installation.1. Lower the temperature of the bearing cups in dry ice. Install inner bearing cup in case. Install outer bearing cup in cage with tooling (A). 2. Put crow foot bar (1) through upper drive gear hole into drum support flange hole as shown. Put pry bar (2) in positionin the lower hole. Lift the drive gear enough
