Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Drain
Note: Stop the engine and allow the engine to cool before draining the coolant. Begin with step 3 for open generator sets.

Turn fasteners (1) on the inside of the enclosure in a counterclockwise direction in order to loosen the fasteners. Note: The top panel on the enclosure for the C1.5 has four fasteners.

Remove the top panel (2) that is toward the front of the generator in order to access the cooling system filler cap. Tilt the front of the panel upward. Pull the panel toward the front of the unit. This will disengage the pins (3) from the frame of the enclosure.

Loosen the cooling system filler cap (4) slowly in order to relieve any pressure. Remove the cooling system filler cap (4) .

Open the cooling system drain valve (if equipped). If the cooling system is not equipped with a drain valve, remove the cooling system drain plugs.The drain plug for the cylinder block is located on the right side of the engine. Remove the drain plug (5) from the cylinder block. The heat exchanger is located on the left side of the engine. Remove the drain plug for the heat exchanger (6). Allow the coolant to drain.
Dispose of used engine coolant properly or recycle. Various methods have been proposed to reclaim used coolant for reuse in engine cooling systems. The full distillation procedure is the only method acceptable by Caterpillar to reclaim the used coolant.
