Illustration 1. The new 9Y4298 Instruction Plate shows the new day-to-day recommendation.... For the IBF214 and IBF314 Clutches, the bearing housing cavity is packed with about 2 3/4 cartridges of grease before installation of the bearings. For the IFB318 and IFB321 Clutches, no grease is installed in the bearing cavity because it is a smaller cavity.
... The bearing adjustments have been changed to give the correct rear bearing end clearances.
IBF214, IBF314 Clutches - New Bearing Adjustments And New Initial Lubricant Recommendation
On IBF214 and IBF314 Clutches, the bearing end clearance is controlled by shims under the bearing retainer plate which is fastened with bolts. See Illustration 2.
Illustration 2. Shims used in IBF214 and IBF314 Clutches for adjusting bearing clearance.1. Disassemble the clutch, wash the lubricated parts in solvent, and put engine oil on them.2. Assemble the shaft, bearings, retainer plate, and main housing. Use no shims at this time.3. Support the assembly on the bearing carrier with the shaft vertical and the output end of the shaft down.4. Tighten the bolts on the retainer plate evenly, while rotating the shaft with a torque wrench until 7 N m (60 lb in) of torque is required to turn the shaft. This is rolling torque, and with this torque the bearing clearance is ZERO.
It is very important that the shaft be turned and the torque read as the bolts are tightened. The torque should be constant with no hard-to-turn spots. This could be caused by foreign material in the bearings, or interference between the shaft and the labyrinth seals.
5. Measure the average shim gap and record this figure. Add shims equal to this figure, plus 0.15 to 0.20 mm (.006 to .008") for side-loaded drives, or plus 0.23 to 0.30 mm (.009 to .012") for in-line drives. Record this total amount needed. Add shims for the smaller amount of clearance because the clearance increases with wear.6. Remove the shaft, bearing cones, and retainer plate from the housing.7. Pack about 1/4 cartridge of 2S3230 Lubricant into the bearings, and pack about 2 3/4 cartridges, or 1.1 kg (2.5 lb), of the same grease in the bearing cavity.8. Reassemble the parts with the correct total amount of shims.9. Install the new 9Y4298 Instruction Plate if not already done. Transfer the data from the old plate to the new plate.IBF318, IBF321 Clutches - New Bearing Adjustments And New Initial Lubricant Recommendation
On IFB318 and IFB321 Clutches, the bearing end clearance is controlled by an adjusting nut with radial notches around the face for locking the nut. See Illustration 3. The thread pitch is 16 threads per inch, or .0625" per thread. Since this nut has 24 notches, each notch changes the adjustment 0.066 mm (.0026").
1. Disassemble the clutch and wash the lubricated parts in solvent, and put engine oil on them.2. Assemble the shaft, bearings, and adjusting nut in the main housing.3. Support the assembly on the bearing carrier with the shaft vertical and the output end of the shaft down.4. Tighten the bearing adjusting
