Information:
Sudden movement or accidental starting of the machine can cause personal injury or death to persons on or near the machine. To prevent personal injury or death, perform the following:Park the machine on a smooth, level surface.Lower the work tool to the ground and engage the parking brake.Stop the engine and remove the key.Block the wheels and install the steering frame lock.
Personal injury or death can result from sudden movement of the lift cylinders or the tilt cylinders. Do not stand under the work tool when you are testing or adjusting the lift cylinders or the tilt cylinders.Do not stand under the lift arms when you are testing or adjusting the lift cylinders or the tilt cylinders.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Start the engine and run the engine at high idle. Operate the tilt circuit and the lift circuit repeatedly in order to warm the hydraulic oil.The hydraulic oil (SAE 10) must be at a temperature of 65 3°C (150 5°F) in order to obtain accurate results.Note: Perform all speed tests with the engine at high idle. The speed of the cylinder should equal the speeds that are listed in tables 1 and 2. Similar speeds indicate that the circuit operation is normal.
Table 1
Tilt Cylinder Speed Test Speed in Seconds
Single Tilt Mode
Time needed to move the tilt cylinder rod from the fully retracted position to the fully extended position . 5.1 seconds
Time needed to move the tilt cylinder rod from the fully extended position to the fully retracted position . 4.2 seconds
Table 2
Lift Cylinder Speed Test Speed in Seconds
Time needed to move the lift cylinder rod from the fully extended position to the fully retracted position (Blade fully lowered to blade fully raised). 6.5 seconds If the cylinder cycle times are not correct, check the following conditions:
Check the torque converter stall speed.
Check the torque converter stall and implement pump double stall speed.
Check the efficiency of the implement pump. Reference: For additional information about the pump performance, refer to the Service Manual module Testing and Adjusting, "Pump Performance (Implement) - Test" for the machine that is being serviced.
Check the setting of the relief valves.
Check the lift cylinders for leaks.
The makeup valves could have leaks.
The tilt spool of the main control valve could be worn or the lift spool of the main control valve could be worn.
