Start By:
Remove the tie rods. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tie Rods - Remove" in this manual.
Disassemble the final drive carriers, hubs and brakes (front axle). Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive Carriers, Hubs and Brakes - Disassemble (Front Axle)" in this manual.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Disconnect brake hose (2). Plug the hose. Plugs prevent oil loss. Plugs prevent the contamination of the hydraulic system.
Remove bolts (1) that hold trunnion (3) in position in the steering housing.

Remove trunnion (3) .

Remove shim (6), bearing cap (5) and bearing cone (4) from trunnion (3). Remove O-ring seal (7) from trunnion (3) .

Remove O-ring seals (8) .

Remove bolts (1) that hold trunnion (9) in position in the steering housing.
Remove trunnion (9) from steering housing (10) .

Remove bearing cone (11), bearing cap (12) and O-ring seal (13) from trunnion (9) .

Attach Tooling (A) to steering axle housing (10), as shown. Attach an appropriate lifting device to Tooling (A). Remove steering housing (10) from the housing for the front axle.

Carefully remove front axle shaft (14) from the differential and the housing for the front axle.
Use the following procedure to disassemble front axle shaft (14) :

Remove grease fitting (16) .
Remove eight retaining rings (18) .
Use a press to remove eight bearing caps (15) .
Remove two spiders (19) .
Separate shaft (17) and shaft (21) from joint (20) .

Remove lip type seal (23) from the steering housing.
Use Tooling (B) and Tooling (C) to remove bushing (22) from the steering housing.

Remove bearing cups (24) and covers (25) from the housing for the front axle.

Remove lip type seal (26) .
Use Tooling (B) and Tooling (C) to remove bushing (27) .
