Reference: Engine News, May 1988, Page 6, "Extraction Tools for 'Live Oil Sampling.'"Live oil sampling valves are currently being installed on Caterpillar products at several facilities. These valves permit S O S sampling of pressure oil while the engine is running. A new 8T9190 Bottle Group includes a probe that can be inserted into the valve to pressure fill the bottle directly from an oil gallery or manifold. This system not only simplifies the sampling procedure but also insures more accurate sampling due to the lessened risk of contamination and the use of well-mixed system oil for the sample.
A Special Instruction is being prepared regarding valve installations on products which do not have factory-installed valves. Until the Special Instruction is available, use the following list to assist you with valve installations. This list of parts should suffice for most installations. Sampling valves should be placed in an easily-accessible location that is harmless for the person sampling the system to approach with the engine running. Locations should also have a system pressure of 170 kPA (25 psi) minimum and no more than 2050 kPa (300 psi). Oil temperatures must not exceed 120°C (250°F).
Care must be taken not to contaminate the oil system while installing the valves. If drilling and tapping is to be done, the part should be removed from the product and thoroughly cleaned before reinstallation.
