Tractors ( 84W1-609, 76X1-358)Incorrect (wrong) assembly of the exhaust manifolds for D10 Tractors with Serial Numbers 84W1-84W609 and 76X1-76X358 can cause exhaust gas leakage. The procedure which follows will permit a good, tight assembly and installation of the exhaust manifolds.
1. When the manifolds are removed from the engine, put some identification on each manifold so that each manifold will be assembled and installed in its original location. Use paint or a grease mark that can not be easily removed.2. After the manifolds are removed from an engine, carefully disassemble them. Do not use a metal hammer during separation. It can cause damage to the manifolds.3. After separation of the manifolds, use a wire brush to remove any carbon deposits from the contact surfaces of the manifolds. Also, remove all of the gasket material from the flanges.4. If a replacement manifold is necessary, use the correct manifold as shown in the parts book. The manifolds used on D10 Tractors are made of high temperature ductile iron. Manifolds used on other Caterpillar equipment will fit on D10 Tractors, but they will not give acceptable service. This is because of the high manifold temperatures on D10 Tractors.5. Before assembly of the manifolds, put a thin layer of 2P2333 Manifold Sealer on the small, outside diameter of each separate manifold. Remove any sealer that gets inside the manifold.6. Use the identification to assemble the manifold so that each separate manifold is in its original location. Do not use a metal hammer to assemble the manifolds. Install the 7N8850 Couplings on the manifolds, but do not tighten the 7N7887 Clamps.7. Install the 2N5953 Gaskets on the studs at each exhaust opening. Do not use any type of liquid gasket.8. Install the assembled manifolds on the cylinder heads. Put some 5P3931 Anti-seize Compound on each stud and install the 8M3175 Washers and 2N7732 Locks. Then, install the 8M2296 Nuts and tighten them to the correct torque.9. Install the left and right turbocharger support elbows, but do not tighten the bolts.10. Tighten the clamps to the correct torque.11. Tighten the bolts for the turbocharger support elbows to the correct torque.Make a reference to this article in the Service Manual.
