Information:

Engine: C15 (S/N: MXS1-UP)Introduction
Technical Information Bulletin replaces the TIB 20 January, "New Software for C15 Truck Engines". Disregard the TIB 20 January. Refer to the following information.Problem
Intermittent Speed "Burp"
There have been reports of an intermittent engine speed "burp", or an occasional engine shutdown when the engine is idling. Some operators of trucks that are equipped with electronic gauge displays have reported that the gauges temporarily sweep, and then, return to normal operation. The reset occurrences have been infrequent and most operators have never experienced this incident. This event was an issue that pertains to the software and does not involve the Engine Control Module (ECM). Additionally, this event does not involve the engine speed sensors. Do not replace the ECM or the engine speed sensor if you have this issue.Temporary Low Power
There have also been a few reports of temporary low power. This occurrence has been reported as a noticeable lack of power after a start-up when the engine is warm. This lack of power lasts up to 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, full power is restored to the engine. It is possible to avoid this incident by performing the following steps:
Turn the key to the RUN position.
Wait for a few seconds, and then turn the key to the CRANK position in order to start the engine. The ECM rest issue that is described above could also trigger this event. The Intake Valve Actuator (IVA) derate strategy is the cause of the low power occurrence. The IVA was initiated for approximately 20 minutes by the quick start. The engine power was limited to approximately 298 kW (400 hp). Operators with lower engine ratings were unfamiliar with this problem. This issue is not a failure of the ECM.Trucks Equipped with Brakesaver and CAT Engine Brakes
On trucks equipped with both Brakesaver and CAT Engine Brakes only, the engine software limited the selection of CAT Engine Brake level to "LOW" and "MEDIUM" via the switches on the dashboard. This restriction protected the drivelines in chassis that could not withstand the combined braking power of both braking systems (if the CAT Engine Brake were to be set on "HIGH"). The new software includes a new customer programmable parameter option that is called "Max Engine Retarder Level". When the new parameter is set to "HIGH", the new parameter will allow the software to recognize "HIGH" selection on the switches on the dashboard and the new parameter will operate the CAT Engine Brake accordingly. The new parameter can be set to "LOW", "MED", or "HIGH". The default setting is "LOW". Eventually this parameter will be programmable in any version of Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) later than 2005B version 1.1. Until then, you will need to call your Caterpillar Dealer Technical Communicator (TC) to have them help program this value. This entire feature and the associated default to "LOW" only affects software for engines equipped with Brakesaver. Refer to Table 1 for the acceptable settings for each transmission and rear end combination.
