Effective July 1, 1992 regulations prohibit the venting of any refrigerant into the atmosphere. Refer to Caterpillar publication SENR3334-01, SENR5664 and NEDG5065-01 for the proper procedure, equipment and tools to reclaim refrigerant from any Caterpillar machine.
Always wear goggles when working on air conditioning systems. The system is under pressure at all times, engine running or not. Escaping refrigerant R-12 (CCl2F2 Dichlorodifluoromethane)or refrigerant R-134A can cause freezing of human flesh. Do not smoke while working on air conditioning systems. INHALING REFRIGERANT R-12 OR REFRIGERANT R-134A THROUGH ANY SMOKING MATERIAL, ALTHOUGH NOT TOXIC OR FLAMMABLE, CAN GENERATE LETHAL PHOSGENE GAS AND CAUSE VIOLENT ILLNESS OR DEATH. ALSO, HEAT MUST NEVER BE APPLIED TO A CHARGED SYSTEM. See Air Conditioning And Heating Service Manual, Form No. SENR3334-01 and SENR5664, for more information on removal and installation of lines and refrigerant from the system.

Remove V-belt (7) from the compressor pulley.7. Disconnect electrical connection (3).8. Disconnect electrical connection (10).9. Remove bolt (11) and plate (8).10. Move lines (12) from the air conditioner compressor.11. Remove tension adjustment bar (9).12. Remove bolt (4).13. Remove air conditioner compressor (5). Check O-ring seals for wear or damage. Replace if necessary. For installation of the air conditioner compressor, reverse the removal steps.14. Adjust V-belt to the correct tension. See the Operations & Maintenance Manual for the correct V-belt tension.15. Fill the air conditioner system with refrigerant to correct pressure level. See Air Conditioning & Heating Service Manual, Form No. SENR3334, for the correct procedure for evacuating and charging the air conditioning system with refrigerant to correct pressure level.
