Introduction
This instruction gives the procedure for replacing the folded core modules of the folded core radiator with multiple row modules.In some applications, dust, fibrous or fluffy debris can cause air side plugging of the folded core modules. This can result in decreased maintenance intervals. The multiple row modules have a lower fin density of approximately 3.5 fins/cm (9 fins/in) versus approximately 13 fins/cm (33 fins/in) on the folded core module. The lower fin density of the multiple row modules are more open to air flow through the core making it more resistant to plugging by fine, fibrous or fluffy debris.Reference: Operation and Maintenance Guide, Parts Book, Service Manual.Necessary Parts
Installation Procedure
At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure. Steam can cause personal injury.Remove the fill cap only after the engine has been stopped and the fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Remove the fill cap slowly to relieve pressure.Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with the skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.
1. Drain the coolant from the cooling system and remove the radiator from the machine.See the Service Manual for the correct procedure.2. Remove the top tank from the radiator.3. Remove the four folded core modules.4. Remove and discard the four top tank seals and the four bottom tank seals. It is important that the multiple row modules are correctly oriented when installed.The holes in the top and bottom radiator tanks where the modules are inserted are not equally spaced. The holes are offset 4.5 mm (.18") to provide the correct spacing for the folded core radiator trash gap.The multiple row modules require no spacing between adjacent modules as there is no trash gap between multiple row modules. The module neck is offset 2.3 mm (.09"), as shown above, to compensate for the locating holes not being equally spaced. The orientation of the multiple row module can be determined in two ways.* The center stiffener has one corner notched at location (A). The larger dimension is on the half that is notched* There is an embossed rib pattern on top of the module. The two small ribs at location (B) indicate the side of the module with the larger dimension.5. Make sure the core assemblies and the holes in the bottom tank are clean and free of dirt and foreign material.6. Lightly lubricate the inside diameter and the sealing surfaces of the seals, the bottom tank and the core assemblies with liquid soap. Use new seals.7. Install the seals in the bottom tank. There are two different seals (8N5130 Seal and 8N7139 Seal) used on the top and bottom of the core assemblies. The distance between the two projections on the 8N5130 Seal and the 8N7139 Seal is different. Make sure the correct seal is installed by matching the two projections on the seal with the two holes in the bottom and top tanks.
