Removal Procedure
Open the engine hood.

Put identification marks on wires (4) for installation purposes. Disconnect wires (4) from alternator (1) . Remove bolt (3) , the nut and the wire clip that secures wires (4) to alternator (1) . Move wires (4) aside.
Loosen nuts (5) . Loosen bolt (7) . Loosen bolt (6) .

The radiator and other components have been removed for photographic reasons.
Loosen nut (9) . Tilt alternator (1) toward the engine. Remove two V-belts (10) from pulley (13) .
Remove bolt (6) that secures alternator (1) to adjustment guide block (11) . When bolt (6) is removed adjustment rod (12) and adjustment guide block (11) will pivot downward. Remove nut (9) , the bolt, cover (8) and alternator (1) from the mounting bracket on the engine.Installation Procedure
Inspect all parts and clean all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar parts for replacement.

Note: When the alternator is installed, do not torque any nuts or bolts until the V-belts are adjusted.
Position alternator (1) and cover (8) to the mounting bracket on the engine. Install nut (9) and the bolt that secures alternator (1) and cover (8) to the mounting bracket on the engine.
Position adjustment rod (12) and adjustment guide block (11) to alternator (1) and to cover (8) . Install bolt (6) that secures adjustment guide block (11) and cover (8) to alternator (1) .
Install two V-belts (10) to pulley (13) .
Adjust the tension of V-belts (10) . See the Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7028 for the proper adjustment procedure.

The bolts and nuts should be tightened to the proper torque now. Tighten nut (9) to a torque of 60 12 N (14 3 lb) .
Tighten bolt (6) to a torque of 60 12 N (14 3 lb) .
Tighten bolt (7) to a torque of 115 20 N (26 5 lb) .
Tighten nuts (5) to a torque of 115 20 N (26 5 lb) .
Connect wires (4) to alternator (1) . Install bolt (3) and the nut that secures wires (4) to alternator (1) .
Close the engine hood.
