Use this procedure to troubleshoot an engine that cranks but does not start. Also use this procedure to troubleshoot an engine that cranks and starts but not within the time required for Emergency Standby Operation.
Table 1
J1939 Code and Description Comments
1664-31
Engine Automatic Start Failed The engine did not start within the programmed parameters for starting.
The alarm output is activated.
The code is logged.
1664-11
Engine Automatic Start Failed : Other Failure Mode Engine speed is detected at less than 50 RPM 3 seconds after the crank initiate request was received by the engine ECM.
The auxiliary fuel valve starting strategy is disabled.
1804-14
Engine Start Enable Device 2 : Special Instruction Engine Cranked for 5 seconds with engine speed greater than 100 RPM and the auxiliary fuel valve is disabled or closed.
The auxiliary fuel valve starting strategy is disabled.
The alarm output is activated.
The code is logged. Electrical Checkouts on the Cat® Electronic Technician (ET)
Table 2
Component Electrical Checkout
Auxiliary Gas Shutoff Valve Attempt to start the engine.
Once the ECM attempts to energize the valve coil, the code will become active.
Valve coil resistance is 18.0 ohms to 27.0 ohms
Auxiliary Fuel Metering Valve Attempt to start the engine.
Once the ECM attempts to energize the valve coil, the code will become active.
Valve coil resistance is 3.0 ohms to 5.5 ohms. Probable Causes
Excessive load
Incorrect base timing
Timing pattern not locked
Fuel supply problem
Auxiliary gas shutoff valve problem
Auxiliary fuel metering valve problem
Ignition system problemIf the engine does not start, a problem with the primary fuel supply or ignition system may be present. If the engine starts but does not start within the time required for anemergency standby generator set, a problem with the auxiliary fuel delivery system may be present.Recommended Repairs

Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat ET) to the service tool connector.
B. Look for active codes that are associated with the system for the event code.
The following will contribute to a 1664–11 diagnostic:
- Faulted starting circuit component
- Faulted crank speed/timing sensor circuit component
- Faulted cam speed/timing sensor circuit component
The following will contribute to a 1804–14 diagnostic:
- Faulted starting circuit component
- Faulted auxiliary fuel metering valve circuit component
- Faulted auxiliary shutoff valve circuit component
Codes
Result: An associated code is active.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: A code is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Check for Excessive Load
A. Ensure that the load is not excessive. If necessary, disengage the driven equipment and test the engine.
Excessive Load
Result: No excessive load on the engine.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: The engine has an excessive load.
Repair: Remedy the cause of the excessive load.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 3.
3. Check the Base Timing
A. Verify that the base timing is correct. Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, "Ignition Timing - Adjust"
Base Timing
Result: The Base Timing is correct.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The Base Timing is not correct.
Repair: Correct the Base Timing.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 4.
4. Verify Timing Pattern
A. Verify that the speed /timing pattern is locked. Verify by observing the
