DTC Code Description System Response
168-02 Electrical System Voltage: Data Erratic, Intermittent, or Incorrect Machine components that directly communicate on this link will be unavailable.
590-09 Engine Control Module: Abnormal Update Rate Machine components that directly communicate on this link will be unavailable.
811-09 Gauge Cluster #1: Abnormal Update Rate Machine components that directly communicate on this link will be unavailable.
1558-09 Electronic Implement Control: Abnormal Update Rate Machine components that directly communicate on this link will be unavailable.
1603-09 Machine Control Module: Abnormal Update Rate Machine components that directly communicate on this link will be unavailable. Each CAN data link circuit is an input and output of select Electronic Control Modules (ECMs). The data link is designed to carry communications between the ECMs. The data link consists of internal control circuits and a connecting harness.Possible causes for an FMI 02 are:
Harness connectors need repair or replacement.
All part numbers are not correct.Possible Causes for an FMI 09 are:
Incorrect ECM software.
ECM is operating intermittently.
Faulty terminating resistors on the J1939 data link.
A data link circuit is open or has a poor connection.
Data link circuit has a short.
ECM is not powering up or down properly.
Excessive data link circuit noise.
Failed ECM.A loss of power in the system to an ECM can cause the Graphical Display Module to activate this diagnostic code combination. Ensure that the ECMs with this diagnostic code are powered up before proceeding. FMI 09 means that the Graphical Display Module has lost all communication with an ECM.Reference: For more information, see the machine Electrical Schematic.Procedure

Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Identify The Active FMI Code Associated With The CAN Data Link
A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat ET) Service Tool.
B. Check for codes.
No CAN data link code.
OK - CAN data link FMI 02 or FMI 09 are not present.
STOP.
Not OK - CAN data link FMI 02 or FMI 09 is present.
Go to Step 2.
2. Check Connections And Harness
A. Inspect the circuit harness connectors(1).
B. Inspect the harness.
A. Connectors are:
* Clean
* Secure
* In good condition
B. Harness is not:
*Kinked
*Chafed
OK - Connections and harness are good.
For FMI 02, go to Step 3.
For FMI 09, go to Step 4.
Not OK - A connection or harness problem exists.
Repair: Correct all connection and harness problems.
Verify that the problem has been corrected.
STOP.
3. Check Part Numbers
A. Check the ECM part number and the ECM software part number for the involved components(2).
Part numbers are correct.
OK - All part numbers are correct.
Go to Step 4.
Not OK - A part number is incorrect.
Repair: Incorrect ECM part number. Install an ECM with the correct part number(3) and flash new software(4).
Incorrect software part number - Flash new software***#i07113770/i07113770.9***.
Verify that the problem is corrected.
STOP.
4. Check The Data Link For An Open
A. Turn OFF the key switch and the battery disconnect switch.
B. Disconnect the harness connector from the ECM.
C. At the disconnected connector, connect a jumper wire between CAN positive contact and CAN negative contact.
D. Measure the resistance from the ECM.
The resistance is < 5 Ω.
OK - The resistance is < 5 Ω.
