The schematic for the lift cylinder position sensor
Note: This sensor is found on machines that are equipped with the steel mill attachment. This diagnostic code is associated with the lift cylinder position sensor. The code FMI 00 indicates that the sensor data is valid but above normal. The output frequency of the position sensor is approximately 115 hertz. The duty cycle of the signal changes as the position sensor moves. The duty cycle can vary from 2% to 80%.The possible causes for this diagnostic code are listed:
The sensor was not properly calibrated.
The sensor has failed.
Mechanical devices in the cylinder assembly are loose.
The ECM has failed. This is unlikely.Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these created diagnostic codes and clear the diagnostic codes when the original diagnostic code has been corrected.Note: Use the 146-4080 Digital Multimeter for the measurements in this procedure.Test Step 1. CALIBRATE THE SENSOR
Make sure that the CID 1964 FMI 00 diagnostic code is active or logged. Expected Result:The CID 1964 FMI 00 diagnostic code is active or logged. Results:
YES - The CID 1964 FMI 00 diagnostic code is active or logged.Repair: Perform the calibration procedure for the position sensor. Refer to the Testing and Adjusting, "Position Sensor for the Lift Cylinder (Electronic Technician) - Calibrate" Story in this manual for the correct calibration procedure. Operate the machine in order to make sure that the problem has been corrected after performing the calibration procedure. If the CID 1964 FMI 00 diagnostic code becomes active when the cylinder is operated through the range, proceed to Test Step 2.STOP
NO - The CID 1964 FMI 00 diagnostic code did not become active at this time. Resume normal machine operation. If this diagnostic code is activated again within a short period of time, perform the calibration procedure that is listed above. If the calibration has already been repeated, then Proceed to Test Step 2.Test Step 2. CHECK THE STATUS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE
Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.
Turn the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Perform the following:
Inspect the harness connectors.
Clean the contacts of the harness connectors.
Visually inspect the wires for damage to the insulation that is caused by excessive heat, battery acid, or chafing.
Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires that are associated with the sensor circuit.
Reconnect all harness connectors. Verify the following:
The connectors are fully seated.
The clips for each connector are completely fastened.
Turn the disconnect switch to the ON position.
Turn the key start switch to the ON position.
Operate the machine.
Check the status of the CID 1964 FMI 00 diagnostic code. Expected Result:The CID 1964 FMI 00 diagnostic code is not active. Results:
OK - The CID 1964 FMI 00 diagnostic code is not active. The initial diagnostic code may have been caused by a poor connection. Resume normal operation.STOP
NOT OK - The CID 1964 FMI 00 diagnostic code became active during operation.Repair: Check the circuit again. Perform the Wiggle Test on the machine wiring harness with the Caterpillar
