Remove Crankshaft
preparatory steps: a) remove oil pan plateb) remove engine front supportc) remove flywheel housingd) remove pistons 1. Remove the crankshaft main bearing cap retaining nuts (1). Remove the crankshaft main bearing caps (2). 2. Install rubber hoses over each of the four end studs to protect crankshaft during removal and installation.3. Attach a hoist and remove the crankshaft-weight 300 lbs. (136 kg).4. Remove the crankshaft main bearings from the cylinder block and main bearing caps.Install Crankshaft
1. Align all timing marks on timing gears.2. Install and lubricate the upper halves of crankshaft main bearings.3. Install rubber hoses over the four end studs. Attach a hoist and install crankshaft with the "V" mark on crankshaft aligned with "V" mark on idler gear as shown. 4. Clean the main bearing caps, and install lower halves of bearings in caps.5. Using wire (B), check the bearing clearance. Install caps and tighten both retaining nuts to 75 5 lb. ft. (10,4 0,7 mkg), mark both heads and bearing caps, then tighten each nut an additional 120° from mark. Remove the bearing caps and measure thickness of wire. Main bearing clearance should be .0035 .0066 in. (0,088 0,167 mm). Maximum permissible clearance is .010 in. (0,25 mm).6. Lubricate threads of cap retaining studs, face of washers, and lower halves of main bearings with clean SAE 30 engine oil. Position caps on engine with number stamped on cap facing the corresponding number stamped on oil pan rail on the left side of cylinder block. Install retaining nuts and washers. Tighten both nuts to 75 5 lb. ft. (10,4 0,7 mkg), mark both nuts and bearing caps, then tighten both nuts an additional 120° from mark. 7. Using indicator group (A), check the crankshaft end play. End play should be .006-.018 in. (0,152-0,457 mm). Maximum permissible end play is .035 in.
