Fourth Speed Forward
When the transmission is in FOURTH SPEED FORWARD, No. 2 clutch (6) and No. 4 clutch (15) are engaged. Torque from the engine is transferred through the torque converter to shaft (1). Shaft (1) is splined to and drives input shaft assembly (2).With No. 2 clutch (6) engaged, torque is transferred from input shaft assembly (2) through the engaged No. 2 clutch to hub assembly (8). Gear (7) is splined to hub assembly (8) and is in mesh with and drives gear (27). Gear (27) is in mesh with and drives gear (10) which is splined to hub assembly (11). Torque is transferred from hub assembly (8) through gear (7), gear (27), and gear (10) to hub assembly (11).With No. 4 clutch (15) engaged, torque is transferred through the engaged No. 4 clutch to output shaft assembly (12) and output yoke (14).Gear (29) is fastened to gear (9) on output shaft (12) and is in mesh with gear (30) on transfer shaft (28). Gear (29) and gear (30) have the same number of teeth, therefore torque is transferred from the output shaft to the transfer shaft on a 1:1 ratio.Neutral
When the transmission is in NEUTRAL, there are no clutches engaged. Torque from the engine is transferred through the torque converter to shaft (1). Shaft (1) is splined to and drives input shaft assembly (2). Since REVERSE clutch (5) or FORWARD clutch (6) are not engaged, there is no torque transfer from input shaft assembly (2) to either countershaft assembly (22) or output shaft assembly (12).
Power Flow In FOURTH SPEED REVERSE
(1) Shaft. (2) Input shaft assembly. (3) Gear. (4) Hub assembly. (5) Reverse clutch (No. 1). (10) Gear. (11) Hub assembly. (12) Output shaft assembly. (13) Gear. (14) Output yoke. (15) FOURTH SPEED clutch (No. 4). (17) Hub assembly. (20) Gear. (22) Counter shaft assembly. (27) Gear [part of shaft assembly (22)].First Speed Reverse
When the transmission is in FIRST SPEED REVERSE, No. 1 clutch (5) and No. 5 clutch (26) are engaged. Torque from the engine is transferred through the torque converter to shaft (1). Shaft (1) is splined to and drives input shaft assembly (2).With No. 1 clutch (5) engaged, torque is transferred from input shaft assembly (2) through the engaged No. 1 clutch to hub assembly (4). Gear (3) is splined to hub assembly (4) and is in mesh with and drives gear (13). Gear (13) is splined to hub assembly (17) and is also in mesh with and drives gear (20). Gear (20) is splined to countershaft assembly (22). Torque is transferred from hub assembly (4) through gear (3), gear (13), and gear (20) to countershaft assembly (22).Torque from countershaft assembly (22) is transferred through engaged No. 5 clutch (26) to hub assembly (19). Gear (24) is part of hub assembly (19) and is in mesh with and drives gear (9). Gear (9) is splined to output shaft assembly (12).Torque is transferred from hub assembly (19) through gear (24), gear (9), and output shaft
