Installation Procedure

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Remove any gasket material from the front housing and the front cover. Clean all of the surfaces of the front housing and clean the front cover thoroughly.
Use Tool (A) to install the crankshaft front seal, if necessary. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankshaft Front Seal - Install".

Typical example
Put a new front cover gasket in position on the engine and install front cover (5) .
Install seventeen bolts (4) that hold the front cover in position. Leave the bolt loose in the front cover until the front cover is aligned.

The location of the front cover is critical. If the front cover is not centered, the backlash between the fuel injection pump gear and the water pump gear could be affected. This could result in damage to the fuel injection pump.
Install Tool (B) and the bolts for the crankshaft pulley in order to align front cover (5) on the front housing.
After front cover (5) is aligned, tighten bolts (4) to a torque of 22 N m (16 lb ft).

Put alternator bracket (3) in position on the engine.
Install three bolts (2) and two bolts (1) that hold alternator bracket (3) in position on the engine.
Tighten bolts (1) and bolts (2) to a torque of 22 N m (16 lb ft).
Remove Tool (B) from the crankshaft.End By:
Install the alternator. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Alternator - Remove and Install".
Install the water pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Water Pump - Install".
Install the crankshaft pulley. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankshaft Pulley - Remove and Install".
