Power Train
The operational checks can help diagnose poor performance in the power train system.Note: Before performing any of the operational checks, verify that all the fluids are at the appropriate levels.
Shift the transmission shift lever into any gear except NEUTRAL. Attempt to start the engine. The engine should not start.
Shift the transmission shift lever into the NEUTRAL position. Start the front engine. Start the rear engine (if equipped). Run the machine in all FORWARD gears. Run the machine in all REVERSE gears.
When both of the tractor wheels are turning at the same speed, depress the differential lock pedal.
While the machine is traveling in any gear, engage the transmission hold control. The current transmission speed should be maintained until the transmission hold control is deactivated.
If your machine has a rear engine, verify that the front transmission and the rear transmission are synchronized. Start the tractor engine. Start the scraper engine. Make sure that the parking brake is applied. Walk to the rear of the machine. Verify that the transmission synchronization light is not on. If the transmission synchronization light is on, the transmissions are not synchronized. If any of the previous machine operations are not functioning properly, refer to this Systems Operations, Testing and Adjusting, "Power Train Troubleshooting".Hydraulic and Fan/Brake Systems
When you diagnose a problem in the braking and the hydraulic system, a visual inspection of the system is the first step. Before any tests are performed, visually inspect the entire braking and the hydraulic system for oil leaks and for damaged parts.Bring the machine to a stop and engage the parking brake. Then lower the implements to the ground and stop the engine. Perform the following inspections:
Check the oil level in the sight gauge.
Check all oil lines and all connections for damage and for leaks.
Inspect the braking and the hydraulic pumps for damage.
Start the engine.
Use a clear container to obtain a sample of the oil. Look for air bubbles in the oil that is in the container.
The oil in the hydraulic system must be at an operating temperature of 46 to 52 °C (115 to 126 °F).
Raise the implements from the ground.
Extend the implement cylinders and retract the implement cylinders several times. The extension of the implement cylinders must be smooth and regular. The retraction of the implement cylinders must be smooth and regular.
Listen for noise from the brake pump, and the hydraulic and steering pump.
Release the parking brake and activate the service brakes while the machine is moving in both directions. Listen for any unusual noises. Ensure that the brakes stop the machine within an acceptable distance.
Lower the implements and stop the engine.
