After you change the fuel filters, prime the fuel system in order to remove air bubbles.DO NOT REMOVE the plug in the fuel filter base for the fuel sending unit (if equipped). The plug should not be removed in order to release air from the fuel system when you prime. Periodic removal of the plug will result in increased wear of the threads in the fuel filter base. The wear of the threads will result in fuel leakage.Note: If the lever for the priming pump cannot be operated, the drive cam of the fuel lift pump is at the point of the maximum cam lift. When the fuel lift pump is at the point of the maximum cam lift, the crankshaft must be turned one revolution. You must ensure that the manual stop control is in the RUN position or the ignition key is in the RUN position.

The priming pump plunger is located on the fuel lift pump. Operate the priming pump plunger for approximately two minutes or operate the priming pump plunger until you feel a resistance.
Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. Allow the starting motor to cool for two minutes before cranking again.
Open the fuel valve. Start the engine. You may need to prime the fuel system, if the engine does not start. Crank the engine. If the engine will not start, further priming is necessary. If the engine misfires or if the engine smokes, further priming is necessary.
Start the engine. If the engine runs rough, continue to operate the engine at a low idle. Continue to operate the engine until the engine operates smoothly.

If the engine will not start, loosen the nuts on the fuel line at two of the nozzles. This will help purge the fuel lines of air before air bubbles enter the fuel injection nozzles.
Crank the engine until the fuel flows free of air bubbles. Be sure to tighten each fuel line nut. Torque the union nuts to 18 4.5 N m (13.3 3.3 lb ft). Start the engine. Continue to operate the engine until the fuel flows without pockets of air.
Close the engine compartment.
