Disassembly Procedure
Start By:
Remove the engine oil filter base. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Filter Base - Remove".
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Personal injury can result from parts and/or covers under spring pressure.Spring force will be released when covers are removed.Be prepared to hold spring loaded covers as the bolts are loosened.
Remove O-ring seals (1) from the oil filter base.
Remove relief valve assembly (2) :
Loosen bolt (5) slowly in order to release the compression on spring (4) .
Remove the following items from the oil filter base: bolt (5) , seat of relief valve spring (7) , spring (4) and retainer (6) .
Remove spacer (3) from bolt (5) .

Remove the bolts and the washers that hold valve (13) .
Remove valve (13) and O-ring seal (12) from oil filter base (11) .
Remove the bolts and the washers that hold cover (10) .
Remove the following items from oil filter base (11) : cover (10) , O-ring seal (14) , spring (9) and oil pump bypass valve (8) .

Remove the following items from oil filter base (11) : plug (18) , O-ring seal (16) , spring (17) and relief valve plunger (15) .
Remove the stud that holds the oil filter to the oil filter base, if necessary.
