Hydraulic System Return Filter Gauge
Illustration 1 g03792677The hydraulic system return filter gauge is located on top of the hydraulic system return filter. The gauge indicates if there is a problem with the return filter or if the filter must be changed. If the gauge indicator is in the red area, stop the machine and change the return filter.Replacing the Charge and Return Filters
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Stop the engine. Slowly remove the filler cap (1) for the hydraulic oil tank in order to relieve any hydraulic oil pressure.
Remove cap (2) and remove the bypass cartridge. Remove the filter element for return oil. Install the new filter element. Inspect the O-ring seal. Replace the seal, if necessary. Install cap (2).

The main hydraulic oil filter is located on the right side of the machine. Use a strap type wrench in order to remove the hydraulic oil filter. Dispose of the used hydraulic oil filter properly.
Clean the filter mounting base. Make sure that all of the used gasket is removed from the filter mounting base.

Lubricate the gasket of the new filter with clean hydraulic oil. Install the new filter by hand. When the gasket of the new filter contacts the filter base, tighten the filter by an additional 3/4 of a turn.
Fill the hydraulic oil tank with clean oil. Install cap (1). Start the engine and run the engine at low idle. Check for leaks. Check the level of the hydraulic oil tank. Reference: Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Hydraulic System Oil Level - Check"
