The data-link is an ECM input and output, designed to communicate with other ECMs through the machine harness. The data-link is not an individual component, but consists of internal ECM circuits and the connecting harness wiring. The data-link is bidirectional, allowing the ECM to receive and send information.The Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat® ET) service tool also communicates with other ECMs through the data-link. Cat ET lists the other ECMs and diagnostic information.Note: All ECMs that use the data-link have a module identifier (MID). SAE J1939 (CAN A and CAN B): The SAE J1939 Data Links are used for high speed system operation and communication between ECM controls and the ECMs of other machine systems.Note: In the event of a failure of the SAE J1939 Data Links, the Cat Data Link is used as a back-up for operational communication.Other components on the machine use the data links for communication.
