Retarding System Lever Function

Retarding System Lever on Steering Column (Right side)
The Retarding System Lever is located to the right side of the steering column. The control lever switch has four positions:OFF (0) position - When the lever is in position (0), the retarding system is disabled.MEDIUM (I) position - Move the lever to position (I) to enable "4-cylinder" engine compression braking.HIGH (II) position - Move the lever to position (II) to enable"6-cylinder" engine compression braking.AUTO (III) position - Move the lever to position (AUTO) to enable the ARC system. The Transmission ECM modulates all available retarders to maintain operator set machine speed.Note: The retarding guidelines are on a film inside the cab and in the Operation and Maintenance Manual.Retarding System Display Function

Location of Retarding System Fault Indicator
(1) Retarding System Fault IndicatorThe active status of the ARC System is displayed on the bottom right corner of the LCD display. When a manual discrete retarding lever is activated, the manual retarding icon is displayed. The fault status of the retarding system is displayed in the lower left corner of the gauge cluster display. (See number (1) in Illustration 3). If the system is faulted due to a loss of signal, the dash lamp illuminates amber. The engine compression brake defaults to 6-cylinder braking. Use Cat ET to check for active diagnostic codes when the system is faulted. If the Retarding System Lever is faulted, the Transmission ECM will assume the AUTO position. The operator will not be able to disable the retarding system. The fault status lamp will illuminate. Under these circumstances, use Cat ET to check for active diagnostic codes.ARC Troubleshooting
Problem: ARC is slowing machine to a lower gear and speed than expected for the grade and payload.Probable Cause:
Payload signal is reading incorrectly.
Grade signal is reading incorrectly.
Machine operation is occurring at a high altitude.Recommended Action:
If Cat® "Production Measurement" (CPM) system is installed, verify that the value is reading properly. Refer to troubleshooting for the "Production Measurement" system. If the CPM system is not installed, the Transmission ECM assumes full payload when the machine is keyed ON. Raise the body to the full up position and lower the body to the chassis to reset the system.
Park the machine on a known flat surface and use Cat® ET (or Secondary Display) to verify that the grade is reading 0%. If not reading correctly, perform IMU calibration in Cat ET.
The engine compression brake performance is reduced at high altitude, therefore the Transmission ECM targets lower gears and speed during ARC operation. Refer to retarding performance film located inside the machine cab.Problem: ARC is not holding current transmission gear after activation.Probable Cause:
Hold speed is set near high idle engine speed in
