(1) Rear axle oil temperature sensorRear axle oil temperature sensor (1) is located at the front of the rear axle housing. This sensor provides input signals to the Brake/Cooling ECM. The Brake/Cooling ECM sends the signal to VIMS, which informs the operator of the rear axle oil temperature. A warning category 2 will be logged if the temperature of the oil rises above 118 °C (244 °F). A warning category 3 will be logged if the temperature of the oil rises above 126 °C (259 °F).Rear axle oil temperature sensor (1) also provides the input signal that is required for differential cold mode, which limits speed. The differential cold mode limits the top speed of the truck until the oil temperature is high enough to ensure proper lubrication. The transmission is limited to FIFTH gear when the temperature of the rear axle oil is below −4 °C (25 °F). The transmission is limited to SIXTH gear when the temperature of the rear axle oil is between −4 °C (25 °F) and 24 °C (75 °F).The signal from rear axle oil temperature sensor (1) is also used as input by the Brake/Cooling ECM. This input allows the Brake/Cooling ECM to energize the solenoid for the diverter valve for the final drive oil, or this input allows the Brake/Cooling ECM to de-energize the solenoid for the diverter valve for the final drive oil.The signal from rear axle oil temperature sensor (1) is also used as input by the Brake/Cooling ECM. This input allows the Brake/Cooling ECM to energize the unloader solenoid valve for the gear motor that drives the gear pump for the rear axle oil. This input also allows the Brake/Cooling ECM to de-energize the unloader solenoid valve for the gear motor that drives the gear pump for the rear axle oil.
