Front brake solenoidThis diagnostic code is recorded when the ECM reads the voltage of the solenoid circuit as being above normal or shorted to +battery. The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed:
The energize circuit of the solenoid is shorted to the +battery circuit.
The ECM has failed.ECM failure is unlikely. Note: Ensure that CID 1013 FMI 03 is on hold and that the diagnostic indicator is illuminated. The nominal coil resistance at room temperature is 4 to 8 ohms.System Response:When this diagnostic code occurs, the action lamp is on and braking by the front brakes is disabled.Test Step 1. CHECK THE SOLENOID CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO THE +BATTERY CIRCUIT.
Turn the keyswitch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the harness from the solenoid.
Disconnect the harness connectors J1 and J2 from the ECM.
At the harness connector, measure the resistance from signal contact J1-54 (wire H863-BU) to all contacts that are used in the harness connectors for the ECM.Expected Result:Each resistance should be greater than 5000 ohms. Results:
OK - Each resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. The harness is correct. Proceed to test step 2.
NOT OK - A resistance is not correct. There is a short in the harness. The short is between signal contact J1-54 (wire H863-BU) and the circuit with the low resistance. Repair or replace the harness.STOPTest Step 2. CHECK IF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE REMAINS.
Inspect the contacts of the harness connectors and clean the contacts.
Reconnect all harness connectors.
Turn the disconnect switch and the keyswitch to the ON position.
Clear all of the inactive diagnostic codes.
Operate the machine.
Check if the CID 1013 FMI 03 is present. The diagnostic indicator is illuminated.Expected Result:The diagnostic code for the solenoid is not present. The diagnostic indicator is not illuminated. Results:
YES - The diagnostic code is not present. The diagnostic code does not exist at this time. The diagnostic code was probably caused by a poor connection or a short at one of the harness connectors that was disconnected and reconnected. Resume normal machine operation.STOP
NO - The diagnostic code has not been corrected. The ECM may have failed, however, ECM failure is unlikely.Repair: Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. If the cause of the diagnostic code is not found, contact the technical communicator at your Caterpillar dealer. If the ECM must be replaced, refer to the Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace" section of this manual.STOP
