Install the backpressure check valve and related parts.
Check if 353-7179 Check Valve Gp has been installed in the field. If the valve has not been installed, install the valve and related parts. Refer to Special Instruction, REHS4985, "Field Installation of a Back Pressure Valve in the Return Line on Medium Wheel Loader Machines"
Replace all of the cylinder seals, including piston seals, wear rings, rod seals, and head seals. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR8881, "Lift Cylinder – Remove and Install".

Install the piston on the rod with the proper orientation. The 9J-4164 Wear Band (2) should be located toward the rod end of the cylinder. The 246-2896 Seal As (1) should be located toward the head end of the cylinder (toward the piston nut). The piston seal should enter the cylinder barrel first, as the rod assembly is installed into the barrel. Refer to the Illustration above.Note: The best practice is to use a seal compression tool over the piston seal before installing the rod and piston assembly into the cylinder bore. Refer to drawing FT3190 Seal Compression Tool for tool information.

Install the piston seal and wear band into the piston. The gaps in the seal and wear band should be separated from each other by 45 to 90 degrees. The gaps should NOT be directly in line with the cylinder ports. The gaps should be oriented downward, towards the bottom of the cylinder, when the cylinder is installed in the machine. Refer to the Illustration above.
Use the proper procedure to evacuate air from the lift cylinders after installation, before returning the machine to service. Refer to Special Instruction, REHS5497, "Procedure to Evacuate Air from Cylinders".
