Proper operation and maintenance are key factors in obtaining the maximum life and economy of the engine. Following the directions in this manual will lower operating costs.The time needed for the engine to reach the normal mode of operation is usually less than the time taken for a walk-around inspection of the engine.After the engine is started and the cold low idle operation is completed, the engine can be operated at low speed and low power. The engine will reach normal operating temperature faster when operated at low speed and low power demand than when idled at no load. Typically the engine should reach operating temperature in a few minutes. Engine speeds, temperatures and load are the best indications of performance. Rely on your instruments, record and compare readings to detect developing abnormalities.After Starting the Engine
If oil pressure does not rise within 15 seconds after the engine starts, stop the engine and make necessary repairs.
Upon first start-up after installation, or rebuild, monitor the engine on an hourly basis to detect any variations in engine performance. Use the exhaust pyrometer gauge to determine exhaust temperature (at each cylinder, if equipped).Continue to make observations and recordings until no changes are noted for a period of twenty-four hours. Then continue to make observations and recordings every four hours. Make observations and recordings every four hours until no changes are noted for a period of twenty-four hours. Thereafter, make observations and recordings at least daily.1. Close the air starting shutoff valve, if equipped.2. Record gauge readings and all other gauge readings every hour on an appropriate log sheet so any changes in engine performance can be detected.3. Compare operating parameters recorded to specifications for normal engine operation on a daily basis. Continue to monitor operating parameter trends and take appropriate action when discrepancies are found.4. Operate the engine at low idle until all systems stabilize. Check the gauges, driven and auxiliary equipment for proper operation. Check all gauges during the warm-up period.5. After the engine systems stabilize, continue to check all gauges.6. Do NOT apply load to the engine, or increase the speed, until the oil pressure gauge indicates normal pressure with a minimum 160 kPa (23 psi) at low idle and normal operating cooling system temperature.Continue to make gauge observations and recordings on an hourly basis.
