Introduction
Prior to replacement of the ECM, make sure that replacement is absolutely necessary. Rarely is the ECM the cause of a problem. Always check that power is available to the ECM. Battery voltage is required between J1-1 and J1-2 of the machine harness connector for the ECM. New ECMs are available either preprogrammed for a particular machine or un-programmed. An un-programmed ECM must be programmed (flashed) using the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) service tool. To determine whether the ECM is programmed for un-programmed, see the following test items. Step 1. ECM REPLACEMENTa. Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.b. Disconnect the machine harness from the ECM.c. Remove the ECM.d. Make sure the replacement ECM has the correct part number.e. Connect the machine harness to the replacement ECM.f. Install the replacement ECM.g. Determine whether the replacement ECM is programmed or un-programmed. This can be done two different ways, item 1. or item 2. of the following Detail.h. Proceed to the topic System calibrations. Perform ALL of the calibration and adjustment procedures. Performance will be appreciably affected if ANY or the calibration procedures are omitted. MAKE SURE TO PERFORM ALL CALIBRATION PROCEDURES. Even if the replacement ECM was acquired from a similar machine, perform all calibration procedures.Determining If The ECM Is Programmed or Un-Programmed
a. Enter the component data display mode; (mode 7).If the display shows blanks, then the ECM is not programmed. See topic Flash Programming The ECM.If the display shows the expected information, then the ECM is programmed.b. Connect the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) service tool to the data link service connector of the machine. The ET service tool will communicate with the power train ECM.If the ECM is NOT programmed, the ET service tool will indicate the problem. If the ECM is programmed, the ET service tool provided access too the expected areas of the ECM.
