Procedures For Conversion To New Bearings
There are six steps in the conversion from the former bearings to the new bearings, excluding the disassembly and assembly of the bucket and lift arms.
Before starting the conversion, put the new bearings in dry ice (frozen carbon dioxide - CO2) and keep them in a freezer or cooler for four to six hours. If possible, keep the temperature at -75°C (-100°F).
Dry ice can cause injury if it is not worked with carefully. Do not touch the dry ice and/or the parts which have been kept in the dry ice with bare (without cover) hands. Use gloves for protection when you work with dry ice.
Before starting the conversion, remove the bucket and then the lift arm assembly from the machine as per the appropriate Service Manual. Remove the tilt lever pivot pins, tilt levers and link assemblies.
Removal Of Existing Bearings
Use the tools shown in the special tools chart to remove the existing bearings from the lift arm assembly.
If desired, you can use a bar, which is long enough to go through the cross member, and hammer to remove the bearings. Be careful not to damage the bearing bores.Removal Of Existing Bosses
Use Arc-air equipment to remove the original bosses.
Installation Of New Bosses
Use the existing bores for the correct alignment of the new bosses shown in the first chart. Then, use either flux-core arc welding equipment or gas-metal arc welding equipment to permanently install the new bosses as shown in Illustration 1.
Illustration 1. Weld specifications for the new bosses. Machining The Faces Of The Bosses
The faces of the new bosses must be machined to get a specific distance between the faces. (See Illustration 2.) For 950 Loaders, this distance (A) is 933.96 0.3 mm (36.770 .010"). This distance (A) must be 944.66 0.3 mm (38.160 .010") for 966C Loaders.
It is important that measurements "X" and "Y" have no more than 1.524 mm (.060") difference.
Illustration 2. Dimensions for machined bosses after they are installed.Enlarging The Bore In The Bosses, Lift Arms, And Cross Member
Because of the larger outside diameter of both the new standard and oversize bearings, the bores in the bosses must be made larger. Since the new bearings are longer than the former bearings, a pilot bore must be put into the cross member. The chart which follows and Illustration 3 give the correct dimensions for the bores and depth of the pilot bores. The depth of the pilot bore is measured from the machined face of the boss to the seat of the pilot.
After the bores have been made larger and cleaned, put some 5% Molybdenum Disulphide NLG1 No. 2 grease on the machined areas.
Illustration 3. Dimensions of bores in boss, lift arm and cross member.Installation Of The New Bearings
Use Special Instruction Form No. SMHS7587 and the procedure which follows to install the new bearings.
