C18 engine components
Engine oil
Power train oil
TurbochargerThe engine coolant flows through the heater element in order to heat the inside of the cab.Hydraulic fan (6) is driven by the hydraulic motor for the demand fan. The hydraulic demand fan is mounted to the radiator guard in front of the radiator. The demand fan is controlled by the engine ECM. The fan draws air through the sides of the engine compartment and through the hood. This air then flows through the following components:
Engine radiator
Hydraulic oil cooler
Air-to-air aftercooler (ATAAC)Under normal operation, the air flows out of the front of the machine. This design reduces the possibility that the fan will inject debris into the radiator. If equipped, the reversing fan kit will temporarily reverse the direction of the fan in order to help dislodge debris from the back side of the radiator.ReferenceRefer to Specifications, Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, RENR7532 for information about the demand fan.Note: The C18 engine's water temperature regulator housing (thermostat housing) (3) uses dual thermostats. Opening temperature for these thermostats is 81 - 84 °C (178 - 183 °F). The thermostats should be fully open at 92 °C (198 °F).Power Train Oil
Power train oil cooler (9) is located on the right side of the engine. Hot power train oil flows through the oil cooler from the torque converter outlet relief valve as engine coolant is pumped through the oil cooler. The outlet for the power train oil is connected to the lubrication distribution manifold. From the lubrication distribution manifold, the oil lubricates the power train.Air-To-Air Aftercooler (ATAAC)
The turbocharger compressor wheel pulls inlet air through the air cleaner and into the air inlet. The air is compressed by the turbocharger (2). Compressing the air causes the air to become hot. The compressed air flows through the air-to-air aftercooler. The demand fan pulls air through the air-to-air aftercooler. This cools the compressed air. The cooler compressed air helps to provide increased power output, reduced emission levels, and lower fuel consumption.Hydraulic Oil
Return oil from the fan drive motor enters the hydraulic oil cooler (5) through the inlet. When the oil is cold, the thermal bypass valve remains open and the oil passes through the outlet and returns to the steering charge pump. When the oil is warm, the thermal bypass valve closes against the seat. This forces the warm oil through the hydraulic oil cooler (5). The cooled oil then flows to the outlet through the large horizontal tube.
