Tractors and 773 TrucksDescription of Change: New self locking bolts are used in the differential and bevel gear group on 772 Tractors and 773 Trucks. The new bolts are used to hold the pinion bearing cage to the differential carrier assembly. Formerly, some conditions caused the former bolts to loosen and damage the differential and range transmission. Before the new bolts are installed in a differential, check the condition and depth of the threads in the differential carrier assembly. The depth of the threads must be not less than .94" (24 mm). A change has been made to the 5K7143 Self Locking Bolt. The later 5K7143 Self Locking Bolts are Grade 8 bolts with six marks on the bolt head and a painted locking patch on the threads. The earlier 5K7143 Self Locking Bolts were Grade 5 bolts with three marks on the bolt head and a nylon insert in a cross-drilled hole. Use only Grade 8 5K7143 Self Locking Bolts with 2M849 Washers when a differential is assembled. Tighten the new self locking bolts to a torque of 95 5 lb ft (130 7 N m).
Adaptable To: The new 5K7143 Self Locking Bolts are adaptable to all earlier machines. An inspection has been made of machines with Serial Numbers 63G2194-63G2205 to be sure the bolt holes have the necessary .94" (24 mm) thread depth. The new bolts are in effect on machines with Serial Numbers 63G2206 and 11S216. The six new 5K7143 Self Locking Bolts can be installed in place of the former six S1585 Bolts. Be sure to use only the later Grade 8 5K7143 Self Locking Bolts, and be sure the bolt holes have the necessary .94" (24 mm) thread depth.
