If the Marine Power Display (MPD) loses communications with the Engine Control Module (ECM) for the ADEM II or ECM for the ADEM III, the MPD will display "Loss of J1939" and "Loss of J1587" error messages. This problem is most commonly seen on ECM for the ADEM II. The Starting Motor Magnetic Switch (SMMS) that is installed on the 131-8284 Auto Start/Stop Control , 203-4623 Auto Start/Stop Control , 131-8285 Start/Stop Control and the 203-4624 Auto Start/Stop Control has caused a transient across the J1939 data link in excess of 100 VDC.Solution
Verify that all communications from the ECM have stopped. Exchange the suspected ECM for the ECM on the other engine. Exchange the MPD from one engine for the other MPD on the other engine. Start the engine. Ensure that there are not any codes that appear on the ECM. If the diagnostic codes are still active, perform the following procedure.

On 203-4623 Auto Start/Stop Control or 203-4624 Auto Start/Stop Control , install a 130-0956 Arc Suppressor Sensor across the SMMS. Refer to Illustration 1.On 131-8284 Auto Start/Stop Control or 131-8285 Start/Stop Control , install a 130-0956 Arc Suppressor Sensor across the SMMS. Refer to Illustration 2.

(1) Add the negative battery connection.
Complete the wiring modifications. Refer to Illustration 3.
