Information:
If a rod is found broken loose into pieces in the hammer and the hammer has been operated in this condition, the nut/rod set which was oriented 180° opposite it in the hammer assembly must also be scrapped, regardless of condition. Even if still intact, the opposite rod has been subjected to excessive stress, which could lead to failure (Illustration 27). Visually check the head contact surface of the nut. If there is any fretting or galling on the surface, it should be reconditioned with emery cloth or fine grit sanding equipment until it is smooth. Remember to check the mating surface of the nut in the front head, and recondition it if necessary. Do not create flat spots by dwelling in one area.
Since it is possible to orient nuts two ways in some hammer models, make sure reassembly is correct. For most hammer models, an arrow is stamped on the nut. This arrow should point to the top of the hammer. For models without an arrow, the number stamped on the nut should be right side up when looking at the hammer assembly as it is operated. Always use 4C-5598 High Temperature Anti-Seize on the underside of bolt heads, the threads, and the nut/front head mating surfaces during reassembly.
Illustration 27
If rod is broken into separate pieces, replace rod/nut set 180° opposite from it also. If rod has thread damage but is intact, replace the damaged rod and nut only. Stamp matching numbers on new sets, and use anti-seize as indicated.
Illustration 28
Separation groove in crest of major diameter (top) of threads caused by roll forming process.
Use again
This seam does not affect tie rod function. If otherwise acceptable, this rod is acceptable for reuse.
Illustration 29
Same separation groove as previous illustration, illustrated by dye penetrant.
Use again
Dye penetrant or magnetic inspection equipment may falsely indicate this separation as a crack.
Illustration 30
Crack running through the thread at 45° angle, illustrated by dye penetrant (arrow at right). Another crack in the thread root is more difficult to see.
Do not use again
These cracks could have been missed if the threads had not been thoroughly cleaned before using the penetrant.
Illustration 31
Tie rod locations to clean thoroughly, and then check for cracks.
Illustration 32
Fretting at head contact surface of nut.
Use again
If thread condition is acceptable. Polish contact surface with emery cloth or other light abrasive. Do not grind base material off surface.
Illustration 33
Thread damage visible inside nut.
Do not use again
Stamp and install new rod/nut set. Use anti-seize on the underside of bolt heads, the threads, and the nut/front head mating surfaces.
Accumulator
Be careful when removing the protective plug and filler plug of the accumulator. Install a new plug if the threads are damaged. Damaged threads in the accumulator cover may be repaired using a tap. The protective plug threads are M28X1.5 on all models except the H140s, which is M30X3.5. All primary filler plug threads are M8X1.5. Always install a new sealing ring on the filler plug before reassembly. The original seals should never be reused.
