Service Magazine, April 29, 1985, Page 4, "Installing New Copper Bonded Bearings Can Extend Engine Life" Until the introduction of the new copper bonded connecting rod and main bearings, Caterpillar recommended, in many applications, rolling in new bearings at mid-life. Rolling in new bearings at mid-life before bearing failure was proven to be cost effective maintenance.
With the introduction of Caterpillar's new copper bonded bearings, mid-life bearing roll-in is no longer recommended in normal applications when the engine receives proper maintenance. The following conditions may suggest the need for a mid-life bearing inspection.
* Marginal lube operation* Excessive metal in oil filter* Excessive lube oil sooting (extended oil periods)* Excessive lube oil dilution (fuel or coolant)* Excessive cooling system temperatures* Excessive Pb and Al in S O S* Reuse of a crankshaft with a marginal profile or surface finish
