"An improved top hitch pin and retainer can be installed on the machines listed above. The new arrangement improves the mounting hardware retention.
To install the new arrangement, fabricated plates may be needed and the existing bolt holes will have to be plugged and new holes drilled.
Use the method that follows and the parts shown in the chart to install the improved top hitch pin.
1. Fabricate a spacer plate (if needed) from 12.0 mm (.47 in) thick mild steel. A new spacer plate is not required if the machine already has one.

Unequal wheel speed can result in driveline torque windup which can cause driveline components to be under load during disassembly. This can result in personal injury. Relieve the driveline torque windup before disassembly.
2. Relieve the driveline torque windup. Use the method given in the Reference Article.3. Support the tractor and trailer on suitable stands. Remove the pressure from the air system and make sure all pressure is released from the hydraulic system. 4. Remove the top pin. Discard the top pin and mounting hardware. Inspect the spacers and thrust washers. Replace any worn or damaged spacers and thrust washers as necessary. 5. Increase the size of the existing M12 or 12.70 mm (.5 in) NC holes to 13.8 mm (.54 in). Tap the holes using a 5/8 - 18 tap. 6. Drill two extra 13.8 mm (.54 in) holes and tap them using a 5/8 - 18 tap. (The extra holes are shaded in the illustration.)

Illustration 3. Location of the parts.7. Install the spacer (8) if needed. Install the top pin (5) with the grease fitting (1), retainer (4) and spacers (9). Install bolts (6) and washers (7) but do not tighten them.8. Install the studs (3) and nuts (2).9. Tighten the top pin retaining bolts to 225 N m (165 lb ft).10. Grease the pins.11. Install the steering frame lock links.12. Remove the support stands.13. Tighten studs (3) until they come in contact with the spacers (9). Do not overtighten the studs. Tighten the nuts (2) to lock the studs.
