G3616 (4CG23-66) EnginesDuring top end overhauls and major overhauls, the tightening torque on the 7W-1632 Plugs in the crankshaft should be checked on the above engines. The 3600 Engines NOT LISTED ABOVE have "staked" crankshaft oil plugs and therefore should NOT be checked. Use the following procedure to check the 7W-1632 Plugs in the crankshafts in the above engines. The illustration shows the location of a 7W-1632 Plug in a typical crankshaft.
Location of 7W-1632 Plug (crankshaft oil plug) in typical crankshaft. Procedure For Checking The 7W-1632 Plugs In The Crankshaft Of Applicable Engines
1. Remove the crankshaft side covers on one side of the engine. Rotate the crankshaft until the 7W-1632 Plug (crankshaft oil plug) to be checked is accessible.2. Put a mark on the 7W-1632 Plug and crankshaft so that the plug can be checked for movement. Use a torque wrench to apply up to 300 40 N m (220 30 lb ft) of tightening torque to the 7W-1632 Plug. If the plug rotates prior to the peak tightening torque, proceed to Step 3. If the plug does not rotate prior to the peak tightening torque, return to Step 1 until all of the 7W-1632 Plugs have been checked.3. Remove the plug and allow the oil to drain from the threaded area in the crankshaft. Thoroughly clean the crankshaft threads with 8T-9011 Component Cleaner.4. If the plug is to be reused, thoroughly clean the threads with 8T-9011 Component Cleaner. Apply 4C-9500 Quick Cure Primer to the plug threads. Let the plug dry completely and then apply 4C-4032 Bearing Mount on the plug threads. It is very important to eliminate all oil from the threads in the crankshaft and the threads on the plug. Oil inhibits the abilities of the Quick Cure Primer and the Bearing Mount. If a new 7W-1632 Plug is to be installed, the application of the Component Cleaner, Quick Cure Primer, and Bearing Mount is not necessary because the new plugs come with a coating of the Bearing Mount already applied.
Do not install any new 7W-1632 Plugs that have a "silver colored" coating on the threads.5. Install the plug in the crankshaft. Tighten the plug to a torque of 300 40 N m (220 30 lb ft).6. Proceed to the next plug until all the plugs in the crankshaft have been checked.
