The on-board software relies on the following hardware components:
Satellite receiver
Display module
Harnesses and connectors
Additional components
Radio module (not supplied)MS952 Satellite Receiver
The MS952 satellite receiver (1) consists of an integrated GPS/GNSS receiver and antenna. The antenna receives ranging information from the GPS/GNSS satellite constellation. The receiver calculates the machine position. The receiver uses the satellite data from the antenna and correction information from a reference station via the radio network. With this type of system, the power is conditioned by a separate uninterruptible power supply (UPS).Dual Receiver Systems
Dual receiver systems (also called dual antenna systems), such as those used on hydraulic excavators, use two receivers and calculate two separate positions. When two receivers are on the same machine, the position of the left antenna on the machine is known as the master. The right receiver (looking forward from the seat of the operator) is known as the slave. The position of the master receiver is corrected by the data from the reference receiver coming through the radio network. The position of the slave receiver is calculated relative to the position of the master receiver. Both receivers send a position to the display module.Display Module
The display module (2) is mounted inside the cab. The module consists of a touchscreen LCD display and an integrated computer that runs the on-board software. The touchscreen display utilizes several small adjustable windows. The windows display the appropriate information for any given machine. Management personnel configure toolbars with tools that help operators easily adjust the views of the display module.Reference: For additional information on configuring the tools that are used in the on-board software, refer to Systems Operation, KENR8277, "Cat® Terrain for Grading and Loading", "Display Configuration Tools".The display module performs many functions, including the following:
Displays information about the site and the machine movement to the operator
Enables machine operators to send productivity messages to the office
Manages power up and power down of the system components
Manages system communications
Provides data to the operator about the system
Provides an interface between the on-board software and other systems on the machine
Calculates information about machine movements
Diagnoses errors in the systemHarnesses
The following harnesses are included:Main harness - Connects the satellite receiver and the display moduleMachine interconnect - Connects the machine battery +, battery -, and the RUN terminal of the keyswitch to the main harnessInterconnect - Connects between the on-board radio module and the satellite receiverAdditional Components
The following are additional components:
Measurement sensors (pitch, angle, slope, and others), as required
Service connections for a keyboard and a serial cable
Wiring harnesses to connect power and the main hardware componentsReference: For additional information regarding the machine hardware components, refer to the Installation Special Instruction for your machine and Systems Operation, KENR8277, "Cat® Terrain for Grading and Loading", "System Components".Radio Module (not supplied)
A radio module is not supplied with Terrain. The 389-0333 Cable As (radio Ethernet) connects to the 383-3028 Wiring Harness (main rear) using a 12-pin (key D) connector. The opposite end of the radio harness employs a standard RJ-45 Ethernet connector with power provided through the
